My tribute to The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening, for the original Game Boy and later Game Boy Colour. In my opinion, still one of the finest games ever made, if not THE finest. The continuity games, Ocarina, Link to the Past and Wind Waker, are all great, but this is by far my favourite, being the perfect little companion for any given journey or sit-up-in-bed-playing-on-the-Game-Boy session.

Keen-eyed Zelda fans will notice Link is off-model here (as is the owl, if you want to be really pedantic). The reason is that this picture is my attempt to illustrate WHY this game was so important when I was 14. The purpose wasn't to draw the characters as they're shown in the manual and other related artwork, but to draw the characters I felt I was looking at, back when I would sit up in bed at night playing through this marvellous game.

If I had my way I'd have been able to include something to suggest the feeling of freedom at the very start of the game, when you realise you can just wander right into people's houses and talk to them. It's rare for an RPG to feel so much like walking about and living a life the way this one did.

The pic was an accident. Abby :iconworryfox: was playing Ocarina to my right, and I decided to see how Link would look if I drew him. Me drawing anything is usually an exercise in "what would this look like", since my style's so odd. After Link was drawn, it seemed right to have him standing in a patch of cut grass, and from there the rocks appeared, Bow-Wow and the sign. As I got more into it I fired up the game to copy the font for the sign (a reference to the way I would stare at the cartridge in my hand for minutes on end, marvelling at how an entire world had been jammed into what was back then a very small cart), copied the owl, and the tree. Initially I put a generic wall in the background to block it off, and had a cave door in it, but at Abby's advice i got rid of that and put in a lot more mountain, and the resulting composition looks lovely - and is a triangle, very important of course.

And then I flat-coloured it because it was getting a bit complicated to look at in black and white. I don't know the first ... well, the third thing about Photoshop, so try not to think too hard about the colouring. It's just there so you can see stuff clearly.

I haven't got the hang of the new categories yet. Does this belong in digital art? I assumed since I coloured it digitally it sort of goes there, although it's a shame because it's the drawing rather than the colouring that I think is the focus of this one. Let me know if anyone thinks it's mis-categorised.

omg man! wasn't this game the absolute BEST!!!! when I finally finished it i nearly cried, the shere beauty of seeing link floating in the water after everyting, then the windfis fly over head.... it was just overwhelming, all the emotions of the game rolled into one big yummy ball. And you're right, sometimes you just can't put it down! I remember sitting up late into the night playing it inder the covers of my bed with a torch for light. It's such a beautiful game, anyone who hasn't played it just wouldn't understand. Great picture too :) I love the own it looks awesome. And great coloring.

For me it was walking up those stairs INTO SPACE. I already knew I was about to see something entirely excellent, but that was what really kicked it off - they may as well have flashed up a message on the screen saying "RIGHT. READY? CHECK THIS OUT."

Finished Wind Waker yet? You're in for a treat of the same proportion if not. I was never that into Ocarina, although currently Abby and I are playing it through on the Cube because we HAVE TO FINISH IT (I only got as far as the accursed Water Temple back in the N64 days). I thought it was great, but not as great as Link's Awakening, because the cartoony element had disappeared, the game took itself too seriously but didn't deliver quite enough(except for in the cut scenes) to justify that. I thought, anyway. Whereas Wind Waker is about as close to emulating the feel and look of Awakening as I need a 3D Zelda to be.

We're wondering whether the Wind Waker sequel is gonna have adult Link in that new style. That'd be interesting to see.

Yea I totally know what you mean in Link's Awakening, you go up the steps and it's like, holy crap, this is going o be awesome, becuase you know that the game will deliver over and over again.

Yea, I've finished Wind Waker as well, that was a great game too, i loved the instrumental part of it, the melodies that the spirits played. It had great music too. Very nicely created game. Although I'd have to say my best Zelda gaming experiences were in Ocarina and Links Awakening.

Did you get Majora's Mask? In my opinion this is one of the best games of all time. If you've shared the same emotions when doing the Kafei part, you'd know what i mean, this game was far more emotional that Ocarina.

The new Zelda will be very interesting indeed, I always wonder how they come up with these great ideas to put in the game.

Really?? I never gave Majora much thought to be honest! Excellent, that's three whole reasons to get a copy of that bonus disc when I can afford it. I'm this pleased |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -| (to scale)

Wow, cool picture. I've been meaning to play something with Link in. He's fun to be in Smash Bros Melee. I love the expression on the owl.

Nice!^^ Link's Awakening is a great game, I was just playing it this morning. The only problem is, I had gotten pretty far, then we moved about 2 years ago, and I just recently found it again. Now I have no clue where I was.^^; I love the owl, great pic!

If you haven't played any of Link's games, then I say you're gonna love them. My recommended playing:

First - Link's Awakening, Game Boy Color. This is a great entry to the series. It's stand-alone, doesn't attach itself to the "Legend" continuity, it's basically a thing unto itself and is one of the greatest games there is. This one will get you into the mechanics of a Zelda game, what it's about and how to play it. And it's cheap. :)

Next: Ocarina of Time (N64 / GC), Link to the Past (Snes / GBA), Wind Waker (GC)

Those tell the story of Hyrule and the Legend of Zelda, and are all fantastic games, each with a very different visual style. Go and enjoy.

Honestly, I'd be tempted to start again after TWO YEARS. Then again, it's not too hard. Just see how many of the instruments you have, then check that against an FAQ on gamefaqs and see what's the next thing to do. After that you'll be away on your own.
